Groundwork Workshop - Locomotion Vocabulary

Learning the language of Movement: from Isolation to Integration

Moving on the floor is not just about strength and drills; it is a matter of movement vocabulary. Often, we think of locomotion as a series of repeated exercises; for us at Movement Searcher, groundwork is a language.

In this 3-hour outdoor workshop in Milan, we will explore how to transform individual patterns into a fluid and conscious dance, using the ground as our primary partner. Just like learning a new language, we will start with "words" (isolated patterns), move on to constructing "sentences" (integrations), and finally achieve the ability to "converse" freely through improvisation.

What We Will Do: The Integration Process

The workshop is a progressive journey that takes the system from simple to complex, developing mobility, organic strength, and resilience:

  • Warm-up & Joint Care: Specific routines for joint optimization (wrists, shoulders, hips, ankles). The goal is to minimize injury risk and provide longevity to your practice.
  • Connectivity and Elasticity: Exercises dedicated to the health of connective tissues, learning to use the body as an elastic, integrated unit.
  • Structure and Gravity: Researching internal structures in relation to the force of gravity. We will learn to manage compressions and expansions to move with efficiency and minimal energy waste.
  • Motor Problem Solving: We will use practice partners as "interferences" and unexpected stimuli. This trains your vestibular system and your ability to adapt in real-world contexts.
  • Locomotion Vocabulary: We will learn various motor patterns, integrating them in pairs or triplets, until achieving fluid, creative floorwork improvisation.

Why Participate?

Locomotion and groundwork are powerful tools for getting in shape and maintaining a healthy, functional body without the need for machines or gyms. This workshop will provide insights into:

  • Training Autonomy: Once you learn the vocabulary, you can practice anywhere: at home, in the garden, on the beach, or at the park. All you need is a little space and a floor.
  • Nervous System & Coordination: Beyond muscles, we will train coordination and rhythm, making the nervous system more plastic and ready to solve complex motor problems.
  • Release and Recovery: We will conclude the session with relaxation and myofascial release techniques to integrate the work and leave the body feeling regenerated.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

  • I’ve never practiced Locomotion, can I come?

Absolutely. The "Vocabulary" approach is designed for this: starting from the basics to give you the tools necessary to build your practice safely, regardless of your starting point.

  • I practice Animal Flow, does this workshop make sense for me?

Certainly. The Movement Searcher approach shifts the focus from simple mechanics to the integration of proprioception and movement quality. It is an excellent way to enrich your style with new transitions and improvisational skills.

  • What should I bring for an outdoor workshop?

We recommend comfortable "layered" clothing and shoes that allow you to move on the ground without restrictions. Don’t forget water to stay hydrated during the 3 hours.

  • Is groundwork heavy on the joints?

We will work extensively on joint health and preparation. The goal of Groundwork is to teach you to use the floor as a support, making movement "soft," fluid, and sustainable for the joints.

  • How does this differ from weekly classes?

In our weekly classes, we touch upon many aspects of Movement. In this workshop, we have the time to go deep, dedicating 3 full hours exclusively to floorwork integration and improvisation.
