What is a Functional Integration Lesson?

Individual sessions of the Feldenkrais Method are called Functional Integration lessons.

  • “Integration” refers to the ability to perceive the connections between body, mind, emotions, and sensations.
  • “Functional” reflects the aim of rediscovering the most efficient and harmonious ways to move in daily life.

Using gentle, non-invasive touch, the Feldenkrais practitioner guides the person through a process of somatic learning and self-discovery. Each session is tailored to the individual’s unique needs and physical characteristics.

“What I’m after isn’t flexible bodies, but flexible brains. What I’m after is to restore each person to their human dignity.”

Moshe Feldenkrais

How Does a Lesson Work?

  1. Initial Interview – In a welcoming, judgment-free environment, the practitioner listens to the person’s needs and goals.
  2. The Lesson – The person lies down or sits on a low Feldenkrais table, fully clothed in comfortable attire. The practitioner uses gentle touch and movement to initiate a non-verbal dialogue, helping the nervous system identify habitual movement patterns and discover new, more effective options.
  3. Integration and Learning – With the new sensory input, the nervous system begins to adopt more efficient and fluid movement strategies, improving comfort, ease, and overall wellbeing in everyday life.

Who Can Benefit from Functional Integration?

Functional Integration is suitable for everyone and is especially helpful for:

  • People experiencing chronic pain, muscle tension, or restricted mobility
  • Individuals who want to free themselves from harmful posture and movement habits
  • Athletes, dancers, and movement professionals seeking to enhance performance
  • Those looking to reduce stress and deepen the mind-body connection

“The truly important learning is to be able to do the thing you already know in another way. The more ways you have to do the things you know, the freer is your choice. And the freer your choice, the more you’re a human being.”

Moshe Feldenkrais

Why Choose Functional Integration?

Unlike corrective therapies or rigid posture training, Functional Integration is a pathway to expanding self-awareness and movement potential. It’s not about doing movements “correctly,” but about exploring new ways of moving that feel more comfortable, efficient, and liberating.

“You cannot teach anyone anything. You can only create the conditions in which they can learn.”
