"If you know what you are doing, you can do what you want."
Awareness Through Movement (ATM) group lessons offer a holistic and embodied approach to improving self-awareness and refining your self-image. Through gentle, mindful movement, the Feldenkrais Method supports the development of more natural, efficient, and harmonious ways of moving.
How Do Lessons Work?
Each lesson focuses on exploring your movement potential with attention and curiosity—rather than aiming for perfection. Movements are not demonstrated visually; instead, the Feldenkrais teacher guides participants using verbal instructions to encourage personal discovery.
What Do You Need to Practice?
- Comfortable clothing
- A floor space large enough to lie on your back and stretch your arms to the sides and overhead
- A mat, blanket, or towel for comfort and support
- An open attitude and willingness to explore without judgment
The Role of the Floor in the Feldenkrais Method
ATM lessons are primarily practiced in contact with the floor—lying on your back, side, stomach, sitting, or standing. The floor plays a vital role in the learning process, offering:
- Support without judgment: a neutral surface that helps you feel and compare differences
- Muscle release: allowing antigravity muscles to disengage and letting go of unnecessary tension
- A base to explore gravity: helping you improve balance, orientation, and grounding
Structure of a Typical Lesson
- Initial Body Scan - A moment to connect with the floor, slow down, and turn attention inward.
- Movement Sequences - Each movement is explored slowly and mindfully. Attention to quality and sensation leads to subtle awareness and more graceful, efficient movement.
- Strategic Rests -Pauses are built into the lesson to help the nervous system process and integrate change. In a fast-paced world, these rests model self-care and self-regulation.
- Final Body Scan - An opportunity to sense changes since the beginning of the lesson—and bring this new awareness into everyday life.
Why Practice ATM?
Regular ATM practice can support:
- Improved posture, flexibility, and mobility
- Relief from chronic tension and musculoskeletal pain
- Lowered inflammatory responses
- Better coordination and motor control
- Increased adaptability and stress resilience
- Enhanced concentration and sleep quality
- Greater vitality and reduced fatigue
- A deeper sense of bodily awareness and balance
Bringing Feldenkrais into Daily Life
Every lesson offers insights that extend beyond the mat. Integrating new awareness into your daily habits transforms the way you sit, walk, move—and live.
