Groundwork Workshop - Up & Down From the Floor

Agnese e Stefano Groundwork

New Strategies & Adaptability to move better in your everyday life

In our everyday life, we often spend most of our time “far” from the floor. The ground becomes therefore a marginal space: we touch it with our feet, avoid it with the rest of the body, or perceive it as a place that is difficult to move from. Often, it is associated only with accidental impact, falling, or loss of control.

And yet, the space between us and the floor is rich with possibilities. It is time to shorten that distance!

This 2.5-hour workshop is dedicated to exploring the relationship between the body and gravity, from low to high, and back again. Learning to consciously inhabit the space between ourselves and the ground allows us to transform the unexpected — such as a loss of balance — into moments of action, choice, and adaptability. When going toward the floor is no longer rare but familiar, the way we relate to movement, stability, and change naturally evolves.

What we will explore

The workshop offers a progressive exploration that integrates somatic research and motor problem solving, helping you develop a clearer relationship with weight, structure, and gravity. We will work with:

  • Controlled Descent - Exploring multiple ways of approaching the floor intentionally, using multidirectional pathways and strategies that reduce the sensation of “free fall.”
  • Weight Shifting - Using weight transfer as a tool to orient yourself, distribute load, and shape your bodily structure efficiently.
  • Relationship with Gravity - Investigating the dialogue between skeleton, gravity, and support surfaces, transforming contact with the floor into a stable yet dynamic resource.
  • Continuity and Flow - Moving from “up” to “down” and from “down” to “up without interruption, rigidity, or unnecessary effort, seeking clarity and continuity in movement.
  • Adaptable Structures - Building bodily organizations that can support changes in level while maintaining stability, fluidity, and choice.

Why Participate

Rediscovering the interaction with the floor means developing a more complete, functional, and adaptable bodily organization. This workshop helps you to:

  • Improve mobility and stability without forcing or rigidity
  • Reduce the fear of losing balance by educating the nervous system to respond intelligently and effectively
  • Expand your movement repertoire, useful in practice, sport, and daily life (for example, playing on the floor with children or grandchildren)
  • Manage changes in level with greater efficiency, reducing unnecessary effort and tension

The focus is not performance, but the development of competence, safety, and continuity in movement.

Who Is This Workshop For

This workshop is for you if:

  • You want to explore movement from a different perspective
  • You practice Movement, Feldenkrais®, dance, yoga, martial arts, or any other physical discipline
  • You tend to avoid the floor due to stiffness, fear, or lack of strategies
  • You are looking for bodily control that is conscious, functional, and instinctive at the same time

The workshop is open to everyone and no prior experience is required.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

  • I’m not agile or flexible. Can I still participate?

Yes. This workshop is not about demonstrating agility, but about building it — starting from where you are. We will work with skeletal support, strength, and weight shifting, making movement accessible to every body.

  • I have knee or back issues. Is this suitable for me?

The work is specifically designed to avoid impact and distribute load intelligently. If you can sit down and stand up from a chair, you will be able to explore the scalable variations we propose.

  • Why do you recommend long pants?

Direct skin contact with the floor can create friction. Long pants allow you to slide, rotate, and change direction with greater comfort and fluidity.

  • How does this relate to everyday life?

Every time you bend down, stand up, stumble, or recover balance, you are already doing groundwork. Making it conscious reduces the risk of injury and expands your movement options at any age.
