Feldenkrais Workshop A Dynamic Spine

Agnese lateral flexion of the spine

Restore Mobility, Space, and Support from the Center with the Feldenkrais Method

Our spine is not a rigid rod, but an evolutionary masterpiece capable of infinite nuances of movement. Often, due to sedentary habits or repetitive motions, we forget that our center is designed to bend, rotate, lengthen, and mold itself in response to our every intention.

In this 3-hour Feldenkrais workshop, we will explore the movements of the spine and rib cage across every plane and in various positions. The goal is to reclaim the range of motion and back health that naturally belong to us—always remembering that every movement involves the whole person in every aspect.

Beyond the Image of the "Cage" and the "Column"

The words we use to describe ourselves condition the way we move. The term "cage" (rib cage) evokes something closed and immobile; the word "column" suggests a static pillar meant only to bear weight.

The reality is different: between our 24 vertebrae and 24 ribs, there is a network of joints offering extraordinary freedom. The aim of this workshop is not simply to "become flexible" or to fix back pain, but to awaken the motor intelligence that allows us to feel and use ourselves optimally. When the ribs participate again and the spine finds its dynamic axis, every gesture—from walking and turning in the car to running in the park—becomes fluid, light, and effortless.

What We Will Explore

Through Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® lessons and hands-on self-exploration experiences, we will work to understand how the sternum, ribs, and vertebrae collaborate for more powerful and comfortable movement.

The secret is distribution: much of our discomfort and pain stems from the fact that some vertebrae work too much while others work too little. We will learn to distribute movement along the entire structure, reducing the load on the most stressed segments.

We will map the spine to rediscover:

  • Twisting and Rotation: For a freer gaze and a more adaptable trunk.
  • Flexion and Extension: To restore synergy between the anterior and posterior chains.
  • Lateral Flexion: To rediscover the "accordion" of the ribs and free the breath.
  • Organization and Support: To understand how the spine can support us without stiffening, improving dynamic posture in both movement and stillness.

Who It Is For: Sedentary Lifestyles vs. Movement Enthusiasts

This laboratory is incredibly useful whether you:

  • Have a sedentary lifestyle: If you spend many hours at a desk, you will discover that posture is not a fixed position to be maintained with effort, but a dynamic and comfortable process that reduces tension in the neck and lower back.
  • Are often in motion: Athletes, yogis, dancers, and movers will find tools to improve trunk efficiency. A free spine is the secret to generating organic strength and protecting joints from injury.

Whether you are a fan of TV series and the sofa or a dedicated jogger, your spine is part of every gesture, dynamic or otherwise. Awareness is the starting point for preventing pain and maintaining long-term health.

Not Only Feldenkrais: A Shared Awareness

The importance of the spine as the pivot of health is a concept that spans different eras and disciplines.

"A man is only as young as his spinal column." — Joseph Pilates

Similarly, Ido Portal often recalls an ancient Chinese proverb: "You are as young as your spine." It doesn't matter who formulated it first; what matters is that this truth is etched into human evolutionary history. The spine is our structural and energetic center. Learning to know it, listen to it, and move it today is not just a technical choice to move better, but a profound act of care to keep your system vital, reactive, and remarkably young.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

  • I’m not flexible, can I participate?

Certainly. Feldenkrais is not gymnastics. We won't force limits; instead, we work to eliminate unnecessary muscle tension that makes you feel stiff. "Stiffness" is often just a nervous system habit that can be unlearned. Flexibility will be a happy "side effect" of your new awareness.

  • I have back pain, is this suitable for me?

Yes. The method is extremely gentle and based on listening. By learning to involve all 24 vertebrae and 24 ribs, weight is correctly distributed across the skeleton. In case of acute pathologies or inflamed herniated discs, please write to us for a preliminary consultation.

  • I’ve never done Feldenkrais before. Is that a problem?

Not at all. The workshop is open to everyone and requires no prior experience. Each lesson is built to be accessible regardless of your starting point or age.

  • What should I bring?

Comfortable clothing and socks. Mats and support materials are already available in the studio. Just bring your curiosity!

  • Why participate?

Because moving beyond the idea of being "enclosed in a cage" radically changes your self-perception. You will feel more spacious and discover that your back is an infinite resource of support. A well-moving spine is the foundation for a vital nervous system and a lighter life.
