Living Consciously: Small Choices, Big Changes

Reflections on awareness, everyday decisions, and the power of transformation

How do we truly experience life?

Over the past months spent in Milan to teach in our weekly lessons and workshops, we had many opportunities to live intense, enriching days of somatic exploration and movement awareness. However, outside the practice room, the everyday contact with the city and its fast-paced rhythms was anything but easy for us.

Walking through the streets, we often saw people moving on autopilot, disconnected from themselves and their surroundings. Rushed steps, tense faces, glazed expressions, uncomfortable clothes, and inattentive behaviours, all seemed to reflect a deeper discomfort... that kind of discomfort many have simply learned to ignore.

We kept asking ourselves: how many people are truly living their lives? And how many are just getting by, settling?

When did we stop asking ourselves if we’re happy?

Maybe we just notice details others overlook. But this experience made us reflect on something essential: when do we start settling for a life that doesn’t fully belong to us? When do we stop asking if what we do, feel, or experience actually makes us happy?

We live in a culture where dissatisfaction is normalized. Frustration and aggression are common currency, and self-respect (and respect for others) often seems forgotten. Honking horns, pee on the walls, trash everywhere, people pushing you around to be the first in line...

But if we’re not in touch with ourselves, how can we be connected to others, or to the world around us? Without awareness, can we even hope to find happiness?

Awareness starts with small daily choices

This isn’t meant to be a philosophical essay. In truth, it doesn’t even take a huge revolution to change one's outlook on life. It can begin with small, simple questions:

  • Do I actually enjoy the shows I watch, or am I just filling empty time with the least boring option?
  • When I speak to the cashier, do I treat them the way I’d want to be treated? Do I stay present enough to connect - even briefly - on a human level?
  • The activities I fill my days with: are they really my choices? Or did I end up in that Zumba class because someone said it was good for me?
  • The clothes I wear: do they feel good and comfortable in them? Or do I wear them just because they’re trendy?

For instance, once we asked ourselves the first question, we almost completely stopped watching TV. And every time we interact with someone, we try to do it in a way that makes us feel alive and present.

Try something different to understand what you really want

Sometimes, what happens is that we don’t even know if what we do is what makes us happy simply because we’ve never tried anything different. If you’ve never tasted chocolate ice cream, how can you be sure strawberry is your favorite?

The key is to stay curious, dare and experiment: change your route to work; smile instead of looking away; meet a friend in a new place. Small changes, made with kindness and curiosity, can shift your whole experience. Each gesture is a chance to check in and ask: am I moving in the direction I truly want?

Not settling is an act of self-care

Believing in the possibility of change is not naive: it’s a daily act of care! Every day, we can choose to stay on autopilot or to pause, reflect, and grow. We can choose to settle or to evolve, even in the toughest moments. And this possibility belongs to all of us. Whether we embrace it or not is a choice we make, moment by moment.
