Walking the labyrinth

Agnese Porcari in a dynamic posture

Praticare è come camminare in un labirinto in movimento: si può avere un'idea di dove si è, ma non si sa dove si sta andando, e i punti di riferimento si spostano con noi.

This means that improving doesn't mean getting better at finding the way out but becoming more skilled at moving around and orientating in the changing environment. It also means that, any time you find yourself retracing your steps or walking the same part of the way you already walked, you are not going back or regressing; instead, you are just walking the same part of a route which will now take you to a new place.

In practice, as in life, to think there is a final destination or an ultimate goal takes your away from the being present to what is happening in the moment. If you walk your way with a set objective in mind or looking forward to getting to the end, you are just taking yourself from A to B, missing out on the journey itself.

Most of the times, to be present and accepting of what IS the moment, with its good and bad sides, is neither easy nor fun. It is much easier to ignore the present and look ahead, waiting for something different to happen or for things to change. But what comes next is defined by how we live the present moment.
